Warmth and Protection for Preterm and Small Babies

Preterm and low birth weight babies need a stable, warm and protected environment in the first days of life. At Kilkaari Baby Hospital, neonatal incubator care is provided under the supervision of paediatric specialists and trained neonatal nurses.

Neonatal Incubator Care

Why do small babies need one?

Preterm and small babies have limited body fat and immature thermoregulation, which makes them prone to hypothermia. Incubator care reduces heat loss and fluid loss, so the baby’s energy can go towards growth and recovery.

What is a baby incubator?

A baby incubator is a transparent, enclosed cot that maintains a thermoneutral environment, which is the temperature range in which a newborn uses the least energy to stay warm. Temperature and humidity are adjusted for each baby, and doctors and nurses can observe the baby continuously and give care through access ports.

How Incubator Care Supports Your Baby

An incubator does more than keep a baby warm. It provides a calm, clean and carefully controlled setting in which our team can monitor and treat your baby with minimal handling.

Β Care is planned according to your baby’s clinical condition and the doctor’s assessment.

Which Babies Need Incubator Care?

Some newborns need extra warmth and monitoring.

Preterm Babies (Born Before 37 Weeks)

Preterm infants require thermal support for temperature stability and growth.

Low birth weight babies (under 2.5 kg)

Low-birth-weight infants require thermal support to maintain temperature stability.

Neonatal Hypothermia or Cold Stress

Neonatal hypothermia requires controlled warming to maintain temperature stability.

Respiratory Distress in Newborns

Neonates with respiratory distress require close monitoring and supportive care

Why Choose Kilkaari Baby Hospital for Incubator Care?

When your baby needs an incubator, you need a caring team, a clean unit and clear information. At Kilkaari Baby Hospital, a hospital focused on children, every small baby is monitored day and night, and parents are involved at each step.

Because incubator care is supported by our NICU in the same hospital, your baby can receive respiratory support, phototherapy or other treatment without being shifted elsewhere.

How Incubator Care Works

Every baby is different, but incubator care usually follows these steps.

01

Clinical assessment

The doctor evaluates gestational age, birth weight, temperature, breathing and blood glucose to decide whether incubator care is needed

02

Stabilisation

Your baby is placed in the incubator, and temperature and humidity are set according to the baby’s gestational age and weight.

03

Clinical Care

Feeding, medication and investigations continue through the access ports, while monitors track heart rate, oxygen saturation and respiration.

04

Weaning Care

When your baby maintains body temperature and gains weight steadily, the doctor may shift your baby to an open cot and begin discharge planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a baby incubator?

A baby incubator, also called an infant incubator, is a transparent, enclosed cot that maintains a warm, controlled environment for a newborn. Temperature and humidity can be adjusted, and the baby can be observed and cared for through access ports.

Which babies need an incubator?

Preterm babies, low birth weight babies, newborns with hypothermia, and babies with respiratory distress, infection, jaundice or feeding intolerance may need incubator care. The treating doctor decides after a clinical examination.

How long will my baby stay in the incubator?

The duration depends on the baby's gestational age, weight and clinical condition. Some babies need a few days, while preterm babies may need several weeks, until they can maintain their own body temperature and gain weight steadily. Our doctors will update you regularly.

Can I touch or hold my baby in the incubator?

Parents can usually touch and talk to their baby with the nurse's guidance. Kangaroo Mother Care, which is skin-to-skin contact, is encouraged once the doctor confirms that the baby is stable.

Can I breastfeed while my baby is in the incubator?

Breast milk is strongly encouraged. If the baby cannot feed directly, expressed breast milk can be given by tube or cup. Our team will help you with expressing milk and with direct breastfeeding when your baby is ready.

Is an incubator the same as the NICU?

No. An incubator is one piece of equipment used in newborn care. The NICU is the complete unit, where babies may also receive respiratory support, phototherapy, intravenous treatment and round-the-clock monitoring.
